A Portrait (of My Mother)
2008

The film captures my mother’s wonderful storytelling across the kitchen table, seasoned with old-fashioned Polish recipes. She tells stories of her work in the secretive Northern Shipyard in Gdansk, building vessels for the USSR, a police raid on her flat while she was typing late into the night, and a memory of footsteps across her snow covered garden one winter night in the early 1980s.

Commissioned by The Wapping Project & Jerwood Charitable Foundation for the series Jerwood: Found in Translation, 2008, and first exhibited at The Wapping Project as part of a solo exhibition Gdansk: Polish Lives Found in Translation, 2008.
